Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI)

The Orange County Probation Department has been an official Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) since 2009. JDAI is a project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, a philanthropy organization dedicated to improving the lives children, families, and communities throughout the United States. JDAI is a change model that focuses on reducing reliance on secure confinement of court-involved youth, as well as improving many aspects of the juvenile justice system. It supports the vision that all youth involved in the juvenile justice system have opportunities to develop into healthy, productive adults. JDAI has eight core objectives:

  • Collaboration with system representatives and community based organizations
  • Date collection and analysis
  • Use of an objective admissions criteria and risk assessment instruments
  • Implementation of new or expanded alternatives to detention
  • Use of case processing reforms
  • Reducing of the amount of time spent in custody for special detention populations
  • Combating racial and ethnic disparities
  • Monitoring and improving conditions of confinement in detention facilities
