Hiring Process
We want to make sure that every employee hired at the Orange County Probation Department is qualified, capable of success and enthusiastic about joining our team. So applicants should expect a thorough and rigorous hiring process, which includes the following steps:
1. Application
Workers interested in any position with the Orange County Probation Department must submit an online application through the governmentjobs.com website. If you don’t already have an account on that site, you’ll need to create one before you can apply.
2. Interview
Applicants will participate in a panel interview to determine eligibility and fit for both present and future job openings.
3. Background Investigation
All Probation Department employees must successfully clear an extensive background investigation process prior to the start of their employment. This process is designed to verify a history of ethical behavior and good moral character needed to perform the duties required.
Each candidate’s background will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, weighing all aspects to determine if the candidate possesses the characteristics and qualities desired by the Probation Department. However, felony convictions, current probation or parole status, active arrest warrants, and lack of integrity are almost always disqualifying factors.

Background Investigation Frequently Asked Questions
Sworn background investigations typically take three to six months.
Non-sworn background investigations typically take six to eight weeks.
Every applicant is assessed on a case by case basis but felony convictions, current probation or parole status, active arrest warrants, and lack of integrity/dishonesty are almost always disqualifying factors.
Drug usage is assessed on a case by case basis; however, it is important to remember that marijuana is still considered a schedule one narcotic based on federal law which is what our department adheres to.
Our department requires a “No Feedback Waiver” be signed, which prevents the disclosure of specific reasons an applicant has been disqualified.
Arrests and misdemeanor criminal convictions are assessed on a case by case basis and are not automatic disqualifiers.
Residence verifications are normally a part of the sworn background investigation process but not for non-sworn background investigations.
Financial responsibility is assessed on a case by case basis for all sworn assignments and for some non-sworn classifications.
Driving records will be evaluated for any potential liability concerns when determining the suitability of each applicant based on job classification.
