W.A.G.S. Support K9 Program

The W.A.G.S. (Wellness Assistance for Greater Support) Support K9 Program is an innovative initiative of the Orange County Probation Department that provides comfort and emotional support to people experiencing crisis, trauma, or other challenging life events.

As part of the Department's Critical Incident & Trauma Response strategy, W.A.G.S. pairs specially trained Support K9s with Deputy Probation Officer handlers to help create calm, supportive environments where people feel safe, respected, and heard.

Whether supporting a victim after a traumatic event, helping a young person navigate a difficult experience, assisting employees following a critical incident, or engaging with members of the community, W.A.G.S. reflects Orange County Probation's commitment to serving people with professionalism, compassion, and care.

Unlike traditional law enforcement K9s, W.A.G.S. dogs are never used for enforcement, apprehension, or detection. Their role is simple but powerful—to provide comfort, reduce stress, and strengthen human connection during life's most difficult moments.

Victims

For victims of crime and their families, W.A.G.S. provides comfort during some of life's most difficult moments. Support K9 teams may assist during interviews, court proceedings, victim services, crisis response, and other sensitive situations where a calming presence can make a meaningful difference.

Youth

Many young people have experienced trauma, loss, or significant life challenges. W.A.G.S. helps create positive, supportive interactions that encourage trust, reduce anxiety, and promote engagement during educational programs, rehabilitative services, family activities, and other youth-centered events.

Employees

Public safety professionals often encounter emotionally demanding situations throughout their careers. W.A.G.S. supports employee wellness by participating in Peer Support initiatives, critical incident response, wellness activities, and resilience-building efforts that help employees care for themselves while continuing to care for others.

Our Community

W.A.G.S. also strengthens connections between Orange County Probation and the communities we serve. Through educational presentations, outreach events, partnerships, and community engagement, Support K9 teams help build trust while demonstrating the Department's commitment to compassionate public service.
